Other Open Source or Free Software Renderers
lucille
lucille is an open source parallel global illumination renderer with RenderMan interface support.
Pane
Pane is a global illumination ray tracer. It uses photon-mapping and ray-tracing to create an image,
given a scene described in the Open Inventor file format.
POV-Ray™
POV-Ray™ is short for the Persistence of Vision™ Raytracer, a tool for producing
high-quality computer graphics. POV-Ray is the worlds most popular raytracer. It was developed
from DKBTrace 2.12 (written by David K. Buck and Aaron A. Collins) by a bunch of people (called
the POV-Team™) in their spare time.
The RADIANCE 3.5 Synthetic Imaging System
RADIANCE was developed as a research tool for predicting the distribution of visible radiation
in illuminated spaces. It takes as input a three-dimensional geometric model of the physical
environment, and produces a map of spectral radiance values in a color image. The technique of
ray-tracing follows light backwards from the image plane to the source(s). Because it can produce
realistic images from a simple description, RADIANCE has a wide range of applications in graphic
arts, lighting design, computer-aided engineering and architecture.
renderBitch
renderBitch is a personal project created in order to learn more about photon mapping,
global illumination, and graphics techniques in general. It is not ment to be to be used
in any sort of production enviroment. Rather, it is released in order to provide a source
code reference for some of the techniques that renderBitch employs. You may use renderBitch
to learn from, and you may use/modify the source as long as you comply with the rules of the
GPL.
RenderPark: A Photorealistic Rendering Tool
RenderPark is a test-bed system for physically based photo-realistic image synthesis.
It's a free software package providing a solid implementation of a wide variety of state-of-the-art
ray-tracing and radiosity algorithms. Although RenderPark is in the first place a tool for research
and teaching, it is evolving towards a full featured physics based global illumination rendering system
that also illumination engineers, architects, designers and artists will appreciate.
R.I.S.E
R.I.S.E., which stands for Realistic Image Synthesis Engine is a state of the art engine and framework
for the simulation and realistic image synthesis of natural phenomenon based on physics, biology and chemistry.
It is intended primarily intended for researchers and people who want to write simulation applications.
Sunflow Global Illumination Rendering System
Sunflow is a rendering system for photo-realistic image synthesis. It is written in Java
and built around a flexible ray tracing core and an extensible object-oriented design.
YafRay
Yafray (Yet Another Free RAYtracer) is an advanced raytracing rendering system with many modern
features including full radiosity and High Dynamic Range Imaging (HDRI) for scene lighting. It reads
a simple XML-based scene definition file, and can be used as a renderer for Blender.
Various Open Source Projects
Xerces C++ XML Parser
Xerces-C++ is a validating XML parser written in a portable subset of C++.
Pathan
Pathan is an XPath parsing and evaluation module from Decisionsoft for
use with the Xerces C++ XML Parser by The Apache Software Foundation.
DevIL Image Library
DevIL is an Open Source image library based on the LGPL license. DevIL is
capable of loading / manipulating / filtering / converting / displaying / saving from/to
several different image formats.
Miscellaneous
Mesh Factory
Mesh Factory is the world's premiere source for professional, high resolution, polygonal 3D models
in MAX, 3DS, OBJ and LWS formats.
